Important New Features in v4.0

"Accepted" option only allows joining from domains you specify: This option allows you to create a mailing list where only people from the domains that you specified are allowed to join. This is similar to the "negative ban" feature from previous versions, except that you can specify several domain names that are accepted. This feature is easier to use than the negative ban feature. See Accepted List Members (list) and Accept Mail From (site and server).

Subscription confirmations use a failsafe reply-to: The subscription confirmation email messages that Lyris List Manager sends have a failsafe reply to address, similar to the failsafe unsubscribe address. This makes it much easier for people to confirm their subscriptions to a Lyris List Manager list: they only need to reply to the message sent to them and the content of the email message they send is not important. This has greatly increased the confirmation percentage rate on mailing lists that have used this feature. See Confirm Subscribes.

Header/footer random rotation: You can specify several headers or footers, separate them with the text "[OR]" and Lyris List Manager will automatically pick a random choice each time a list posting goes out. This allows you to have several advertisers on your list, with a randomly picked ad displaying each time. If you need explicit rotation of ads, rather than random rotation, you can use the new HTTP mail merge code, in tandem with our sample CGI script that rotates advertisements (see the "Scripts" download page at the Lyris List Manager web site). See Headers and Footers.

listname-digest@... joins you to the list and sets you to digest: By sending email to listname-digest@… (for text digests) or listname-mimedigest@… (for MIME digests), Lyris List Manager will change your membership to digests. If you are not yet a member, Lyris List Manager will now subscribe you to the list and automatically sent you to your digests setting. Previously joining and setting yourself to digests required two separate steps. See Email Commands.

"End quiet" sets no admin response to your commands: By finishing your administrator email message lyris@ with the command "end quiet" you instruct Lyris List Manager to not send you back any e-mail notification of your commands. This is very useful when a script generated the administrator commands and there is no need to receive acknowledgement of the execution of the commands. Because Lyris List Manager now sends back only one administrator email message, no matter how many email commands are sent in one message, this is a handy way to discard that notification email message. See End Command.

Button to change retry time on outgoing mail to resend immediately: In the outgoing mail web page, when you are viewing an outgoing mail item which is awaiting a retry mailing, you can click a button to tell Lyris List Manager to retry sending the message immediately. By default, Lyris List Manager retries mailings every four hours, but in cases where you know the cause of a temporary failure, it is useful to be able to retry the message immediately. See Outgoing Mail Information.

Button to mark an outgoing message as done: If an outgoing mail message is of status "new" or of status "retry", you can tell Lyris List Manager to not send this message, by changing its status to "done". If a message is in "pending" status, that means that Lyris List Manager is currently delivering that message and you cannot stop it until the message goes into "retry" status. However, if it is vital for you to stop an email message that is currently in "pending" status, you can shut down your Lyris List Manager server, start it back up with mailing disabled (with the command "lyris start nomail") and then set the message to "done". See Outgoing Mail Information.

Ability to set the confirmation document with your own text: You can now create a document that will be used as your subscription confirmation document. You choose the document to use inside the list info web page. See Confirm.

Improved mail merging in documents, auto-responders: Mail merging has been extensively improved, with much more support for merging in documents and autoresponders. You can now also merge in all the recipient data fields, so that every message can contain quite a bit of unique data.

New member count reports by status and type: A button now appears on the members page which goes to report pages displaying member counts organized by type, by status and by date. See Member Count.

One response message to admin commands: Lyris List Manager now consolidates all responses to your administrator commands in a single email response that it sends back to you. Previously each administrator email command caused a separate response to come back to the administrator. See Administrator Commands.

Site and server wide banning option: At the site info and server configuration levels, you can now permanently ban people from all lists under your site or server. The same applies for the new "accepted" feature. See Ban Mail From and Accept Mail From.
