New in 3.0 beta 1 (v2.542)
Features
Real-time statistics of mail sending performance. These can be reached from the "statistics" button on the server admin menu. Be sure to click the "reload" button so that you can see statistical
changes from one time to another. You will see statistics such as amount of bandwidth used, number of messages sent per minute, etc. See Statistics.
The outgoing mail view now shows the number of times a given message has been retried. See Outgoing Mail.
Bug fixes
If the From: line is overridden in the list configuration, this is now correctly reflected in the message reading page's list of messages. Previously, the override was not used.
A bug in Solaris multithreading was causing Lyris List Manager to occasionally crash under very heavy loads. This has been fixed.
Improvements to the speed of the web interface
Improvements to the web interface speed, when Lyris List Manager is under heavy load. The database locking scheme now favors high-priority threads (such as the web interface), where previously locks
were handed out on a first-come-first-serve basis. Systems with plenty of CPU power will see significant performance enhancements. Low-powered systems will see a performance improvement, but it
will not be as significant.
Lyris List Manager for Solaris/Sparc is now using the SmartHeap memory manager, which yields about a 20% performance improvement overall. We are working on using SmartHeap on Windows NT/95 and also
on Solaris/Intel.
Lyris List Manager on Unix platforms now "nices" itself to a lower priority (i.e., use less CPU time), which results in a performance improvement to the web interface. This change allows processes
launched by the web server to finish quicker, resulting in better response time with the web interface. Previously, Lyris List Manager was using up most of the machines CPU time, and web interface
processes were slowed. Unfortunately, Windows NT does not have this fine-grained control over priorities (only normal, idle or high). However, Windows NT users can achieve similar results my making
their web server run at a high priority, using the "pview.exe" program.
After these changes, the web interface on our UltraSparc 1/140 consistently loads in less than two seconds, even when the Lyris List Manager server is at its peak load, which currently is 51,000
messages/hour (at a 4.5k message size).
