Read and Search Messages
From this page, the user can select messages to read using a variety of means. They can page forward or backward among the available messages. They can jump to messages starting at a
given date. Or, they can search the text of the messages for word of interest.
The Read and Search Messages page has the following elements:
Date Range These two lines inform the user of the date range of messages being displayed. The first line tells the user between what dates messages exist. The first date is
the earliest date for which a message exists. The second date is the most recent date for which a message was contributed. The second line tells the user between what dates the current set of
messages falls.
Message Set The current page of messages are displayed here. Each message is given a separate line. The subject of the message is displayed, followed by the author's email
address in parentheses, with the date of the message appended in square brackets at the end.
View Message button When the user clicks on this button, the currently selected message is displayed in the Read a Specific Message page. Once on that page, the user will be
able to continue forward or backward in the message set. See View a specific message.
Jump Messages button The user can choose to move forward or backward in the total message set. On the left, there is a drop-down list box that is used to select the number of
messages to jump. To the right of the drop-down list box, are the buttons Jump Forward and Jump Backward. If you are currently viewing the last message for that mailing list, only
the Jump Backward button will be visible. Likewise, if you are currently viewing the first message for that mailing list, only the Jump Forward button will be visible.
Search The user can search for words of interest. Lyris List Manager automatically indexes all mailing list messages, so search results are returned very quickly.
The user can choose between searching for all the given words, or any of the given words. If the user chooses "All These Words", Lyris List Manager will only display messages which contain all the
given search words. If the user chooses "Any Of These Words", Lyris List Manager will display messages which contain at least one of the given words. If there are multiple hits, messages with the
most matching messages will be displayed first. If there are messages with an equal number of matching words, the messages will be ordered by date, with the most recent messages first.
The user can choose to have Lyris List Manager look for the search words anywhere in the message, just in the message header, or just in the message body.
The Lyris List Manager text index does not remove so-called "noise" words -- all words of at least 2 letters, and less than 30 letters are indexed. Punctuation is filtered out, and understood as a
word separator. Non-English language characters are indexed correctly. The Lyris List Manager search engine is not English-language dependent. New messages begin to be indexed 15 seconds after
they are created. However, the Indexing process operates as the lowest priority task, and is only operative while the Server is idle. Unless a Lyris List Manager Server is extremely busy, there is
likely to be enough idle time for a new message to be indexed within a few minutes.
Note: The full text index does not index email file attachments: only the actual message text is indexed.
Jump To Date button The user can enter a date in the text box, and press the Jump to Date button to display a message set, with the first message of the set being on
the given date. If there is no message for the date, the first message immediately after that date will begin the message set.
Number of Messages to Display The user can decide to display a large number of messages in the message set at one time. The default is 200 messages. To change this, the user
chooses a new number in the drop-down list box, and clicks the Show button. The current message set will be redisplayed, but with a larger set of messages.
Threaded vs. Sorted By default, messages are organized by their Subject: Messages with the same subject, or that are replying to the same subject (Re: xyz) are grouped together.
The messages are ordered so that the newest subjects are displayed at the top, with each reply grouped below it, in the order each reply was composed. This type of display is known as "threaded by
subject".
Other message ordering options are "sorted by date" and "sorted by author". If you want to change the way messages are being ordered, select a different ordering, and then click the "show" button.
Main Menu button The user can click on this button to go to the Menu of Member Choices.
Delete Selected Messages If you are a list administrator, a button will appear titled "delete selected messages". You can mark any number of messages, and by clicking on this
button you will cause these messages to be deleted.
