Important Upgrade Information
The ListManager installer makes upgrading easy! Simply select upgrade when prompted. However, there are some steps you should take before upgrading to prepare yourself. Please review this entire upgrading section of the Manual before upgrading ListManager.
WARNINGS:
Back up your database and test before upgrading. If you encounter a problem while doing the actual upgrade, you may not be able to recover your data without a backup.
Some MS SQL Server customers have experienced problems with a reports refresh process that runs after an upgrade from a prior version is finished and ListManager has been restarted. For further instructions and a script that should be run to address this, go here. New MS SQL installs and Oracle/PostgreSQL installs or upgrades will not be affected.
Upgrading and Your License
Your ListManager license controls what version you may run or the date up to which you may upgrade your ListManager version. To determine if you are allowed to upgrade to the current version of ListManager, check Max Version and Last Day to Upgrade in Utilities: Administration: Server: Operational Statistics: License Capabilities.
Upgrading and Your Database Server
ListManager's database structure has been optimized to be more scalable. These changes will make mailing speeds on database servers with sufficient hardware faster than ever.
However, underpowered database servers may have performance problems. See our Requirements and Recommendations page before upgrading to 7.8 or later versions to determine whether your database server meets the requirements before upgrading ListManager.
ListManager also uses more database space than previous versions, and the upgrade may take a long time to perform. See Preparing to Upgrade for instructions about how to reduce the size of your database before upgrading.
New tables created by ListManager in MSSQL will be owned by DBO. In versions before 8.1, the ListManager tables were owned by the user.
ListManager requires Oracle 9iR2 or 10g
Earlier versions of ListManager supported Oracle 8i and 9i. To upgrade ListManager, you will need to upgrade your Oracle database to version 9iR2, 10gR1 or 10gR2.
If you cannot upgrade your Oracle database, we do not recommend upgrading ListManager.
ListManager requires PostgreSQL Upgrade and PL/pgSQL
Earlier versions of ListManager supported PostgreSQL 7.1.3 only. To upgrade ListManager and have it run properly, you will need to upgrade your version of PostgreSQL and manually enable PL/pgSQL. See PostgreSQL and ListManager for more information.
If you cannot upgrade your PostgreSQL database, we do not recommend upgrading ListManager.
ListManager 7.5 and above no longer supports Perl-based web interface and LCP
ListManager 7.5 and above no longer support the Perl-based web interface that was shipped with previous versions of ListManager. This also includes LCP, which may have been used to create custom scripts.
If you have been using the old interface extensively or use custom scripting to run certain portions of ListManager prior to ListManager 7.5 (including list member signup forms), please contact support prior to upgrading.
Important Note for Users of v7.x and Lower
A direct upgrade from ListManager version 7.x and lower to the current version is NOT supported. The upgrade process to ListManager 9.x varies depending on which version you are currently using:

2. Upgrade from v7.0 to v.8.9c.
3. Upgrade from v8.9c to v9.x.
To upgrade from v.7x

2. Upgrade from v8.9c to v9.x.
To upgrade from v8.x

If a direct upgrade from 4.2.1 is attempted, your data will not be copied correctly to the new database. See Upgrading ListManager 4.2.1 or Lower for details.
